Final Thoughts

The Pop Video it self was trying to show how society is over powering the restriction of freedom and how the protagonist needs to escape from the authorities in order to survive the cruel world.

My production was “Walking on a dream” by “Empire of the Sun”. Actual performance in the video was set within the narrative therefore there was no band , guitar , drums or singing in a studio. Media language it self was vital in portraying the meaning onto the screen.

Camera Work

One of the most important and crucial element of creating a high-quality pop video is the camera work. According to “Khuleshov” 70% of understanding comes from the pictures. In other words most understanding comes through your eyes.

In our pop video we have a master shot which we come back to time to time in order to provide a pose of change of direction. Our master shot is a wide shot of your protagonist singing while lying in bed.

A further important shot is a close up of the lead singer and his face in order to show the importance of him and intimacy.
A two shot/reverse was also in our video to portray the connection and relationship between the two characters. This is a shot where a camera first of all shoots from the view of lead singer and then moves to a shot from the perspective of the female character and finally back to the main character. This kind of shot shows connection and importance of both protagonists.

We have also used a tracking shot in the beginning of the video when the nurse is walking through the corridor and the camera is following her. The shot was incentive and had some mystery . This was portrayed due to dark colours and the nurse being fairly different to other nurses by wearing high heels. This makes the audience feel some suspicious.

Editing

In our editing it was important to use fast cutting pace in order for them to cut to the beat and therefore going with the music. The pace and rhythm of our music is fairly quick therefore it was important to have short and fast shots without losing the plot and meaning.

Another important aspect of editing is montage which emphasises and controls the emotion as well as showing the audience meaning and for them to follow the story.

Special Effects

In our pop video we have used blue screen effect to make the video less realistic and more comedy like. The scene where protagonist is running through the tunnel is the shot on blue screen.

We have also used other effects such as the making everything more blurry in a shot where the singer is lying in bed and is injected with a drug by a nurse.

We have also used slow motion effect in a tracking shot through the field where both actors are standing close to each other and stare into each others eyes. The slow motion was important to show the romance and relation between the two.

Finally the use of CGI was also important (Computer Generated Images). The use of CGI helped us in all the shots in the mental institution by making them all much darker almost black and white. This was done in order to show the cold and miserable place hospital is and how depressing the life there is for the protagonist.

Mise- en-scene

Mise-en-scene is a crucial part of creating a pop video. Although audience are mostly attracted by the performance and the characters them selves mise-en-scene brings realism. The background must be set perfectly in order to make the scene more realistic for the audience to be more diverted and sympathetic towards the scene. There are two different types of settings in our video: the cold and dark room of mental institution with the props such as the pyjamas to show the horrible side of life and another set outside where the lights are more bright and happy to portray the dreamy and joyful life.

Although there is couple of things that could be done such as better blue screen effect as well as the weather condition which wasn’t good and our crew was hoping for a sunny day to show the contrast between the two sets. However over all our video worked well and our team is happy with the production.

WHAT I HAVE LEARNT FROM MY AUDIENCE FEEDBACK ? INCLUDING DISCUSSION OF VARIOUS THEORISTS AND THE STRENGHTS AND WEAKNESSES OF MY POP VIDEO AND ANCILLARY PRODUCTS.

Target Audience

Our main target audience was the people from the social class of D , C and B. The reason for addressing our pop video for such groups is due to them being the majority of the population therefore reaching to the maximum of the audience. As you can see our targets still varies from D to B which means its not only aimed at lower income families but also a more skilled and educated people from a wealthier backgrounds. The main age group of the audience we wanted to reach was 15-25. Teenagers and young adults at this age are the ones most interested and inspirited by music. Targeting such audience meant the audience would grow and not shrink due to age differences in age.
The song was there for both males and females. First of all males would be attracted to the song and especially the pop video due to the events that are happening , the restriction of freedom , the lead singer being trapped in the mental hospital , the drugs and finally how he over comes all the problems and difficulties escaping in the end to find the woman of his dreams there in front of him. It may also be interesting and attractive for the female side because of sexual magnetism and the rebellious behavior of the singer. The breaking of the law and over coming the constitution meant that people are stronger then the authorities and that believe that love could heal and help would definitely have an impact of the attraction of the female audience.

You tube

Our pop video was loaded up in beginning of January and I believe its doing fairly well on YouTube with 637 views and mainly positive comments. The positive quotes are 1)” Good mix of abstract and realism” 2)”great theme and really suited the music” 3)”really thought through idea” however there are some negatives as well such as “ did not like what you did 32 second into pop video” and “the blue screen effect of the running man” (didn’t work) .
Over all in my opinion the feed back is good and audience liked the performance however the running through tunnel part didn’t work as well as we hoped it would.

What Points you wanted to Address

Our pop video was addressed to mainly the teenagers and young adults we weren’t after the older and more sophisticated audience .
Our pop video had the performance within the narrative where the singer was singing while the narrative and the story was running. At the start of the video people may be lead to believe that it is something serious and more elderly however as you get around 25 seconds in you realize that it is more of a comedy and even later that there is a plot of romance in the story. The video is there to make people more happy and grateful instead of depressed and aggressive.
Nevertheless also showing the overcoming of the authorities and in this case the mental hospital and the nurse. By running away the character in our pop video shows that anything can be done even an escape from a mental institution.

Peer Group

Some of my friends and even family members have seen the pop video. All of them were very positive about the video and had no bad comments except the running (the blue screen effect). All of them had a smile all through the watching process and said that its is a comedy , that brings people into a better mood , making their day lighter and happier and showing a happy ending with the singer escaping and finding the love from his dreams that is there walking towards him.
Although it was harder for me to show it to people close to me due to the my performance as the lead singer which always makes me nervous when ever I have to watch the video with someone judging and observing.

Focus Group

An honest and open opinion was important from me and my teammates on the project so we got some students that did not see our pop video previously and gave then a questionnaire00 of open questions to find out their honest opinion and view on the video.
1) General opinion on the video ?
- comical does it fit with the song? Shows a man in a mental hospital? Its all a dream
- I quite liked some of the shots, some of the special effects looked cool too
- Comical, abstract, lots of incongruity which is eventually revealed at the end with an ironic twist
- Many things to think about fun and exciting to watch, want to know where he’s going
- Good concept unintentionally funny at times but could be because I know the cast. Good pace and some nice images/ effects

2) What do you think is the meaning behind this song?
- you can always dream of freedom no matter where you are
- the guy running away from an asylum, he’s in love with the weirdly dressed girl
- the nature of teenage boys, dreams that aren’t forgettable
- he is mental, the wobbly camera and special effects show an unstable mind
- wanting to break free from normality and follow your dreams

3) How does the video look (colours, lines location interior/exterior)?
- colours and locations help to distinguish between his imagination and reality
- special effects invite us into his dream, a clear contrast between dreams and reality (static)
- the colours show what is happening well the white room and corridor shots imply an institution and when they are both outside colours and clothes are bright showing happiness
- yes, mental hospital looks miserable because of the colour drain, could contrast in the dreams world with vibrant colours

4) How is the artist portrayed in this video ?
- clearly dreamy
- he is feminine in this video
- fun loving, in love with an older woman whom he fantasises about
- unstable mind? Not well but friendly and harmless
- mentally ill

5) Does he allow you to connect with him? If yes/no state why
- Yes however it is hard to relate with what he is trying to say
- close ups show his emotion
- yes from the start we are invited to connect with extreme cu of his eyes
- yes because he lets us in his mind and the 1st shot is of his eye which is very personal
- I can connect but find it hard to relate because I just he him as a crazy person

6) What particular ranges of audience would you think this appeals to ?
- young females
- teenagers
- teenagers aged 16 onwards, older people might not find it funny
- large audience but mainly younger people because of the colours and types of clothes they wear outside
- 15-25, girls more than boys

7) What do you think about the narrative?
- was good. No performance? Was more like a short film
- it is done well, suits the song well
- clever. The truth of the story is held back until the end. Keeps us engaged
- like it because it is jumbled but you can still understand what in going on. It switches back and forward showing imagination and real life
- good, not sure I like the idea of people breaking out of asylums though

8) How does this video portray male and female roles?
- female nurse? Men not nurse? Males are weak? Subverting stereotypes
- they are portrayed as equal to begin with until the end when the female has higher status. Interesting switch
- both the same, maybe the woman at the end is portrayed a little more important and sophisticated
- not particularly other than the stereotypical role of the female nurse

9) Which shots worked and which shots didn’t? (and why?)
- the running shot what’s he running from or to?
- I didn’t like the shot when he was running towards a black hole or whatever that was
- Good: the circular tracking, characters changing clothes. Bad: blue screen, became comical, raised questions where is he going?
- I loved the 360 tracking shot because it broke the 180 rule and really let us connect with him and into his relationship and mind
- Twisting the picture in the mental hospital worked well – made me feel uneasy and want to leave the hospital as much as the artist. Artist running on spinning background didn’t work for me, too comic

10) What could be improved?

- some of the editing could be smoother
- the running in the blue screen because it looked odd
- running shot the kaleidoscope background doesn’t fit with the video
- artist’s run. I wanted the artist to find love at the end rather than just escape

Blumler and Katz Theory

Blumler and Katz are theorists that argue that TV news are not passive but instead are there to educate and entertain the audience. It is important for the viewers to relate to the news therefore it isn’t something from out side of there sphere and therefore worth learning and knowing about. In my opinion the exact same theory could be adopted to our pop video. There are 4 main attributes audience always look for no matter if it’s a film , TV news or even a pop video.
1) The entertainment of audience which is called Diversion
-In our pop video there is quite a lot of entertainment. One of the most comic parts of the whole video that people find the most hilarious and amusing is the running of the male actor through the tunnel which in real life was made through the shooting on blue screen and later on special effects. Another part of interesting and funny parts is the jumping up and down in the filed where both of the actors are happy and also bring the audience into a better mood.

2) Personal relations where the audience finds out and relates to other human beings and finds out about relationships of others.
- There are some shots and acts in the video where the viewer can relate to the relationship and “love” of the two. There is a great tracking shot of a hand held camera through the field of the two actors. The shot is spinning and also slow all of that was made in order to attract the audience , make them feel for the two characters to portray the love story and show the meaning of happiness and delight.
3) Personal identity is where the audience can see them selves in the media text , when they can relate them selves to the hero in this case the pop star.
-The male audience would relate with the lead singer in a rebellious way in breaking the law but in a good way to escape and find his love . As well as the females can relate to the actor through seeing that men are still there and believe in love.

4) Finally Surveillance where audience learn more about people in the world
- In this case the audience could find out about the mental hospitals and how maybe they are no there to help but because of the evil nurse they are there to bring harm to the suffering ones such as the lead singer.

Stuart Halls Theory

The theory of Stuart Halls the encoding and decoding. The idea that the audience do not act as a mass but as a smaller and narrower group of people defined by social and ideological elements. The encoding and decoding is usually producers and their views for example most of the TV news producers or editors are white male, middle aged and usually public educated. That would mean that the news they choose would be dependant on their ideologies , believes and views on life. It may mean that the news do not cover the important part , even or story for the particular individual.
The example in our pop video maybe the narrative its self. Our story is shown from the perspective of the patient of the mental hospital and therefore the patient is the antagonist ( the good guy) and the audience are in favor of him. The escaping, falling in love and overcoming the law maybe attract the audience and give them an idea that he is the good guy fighting the bad and the evil . However it may be the other way around. Instead the lead singer is the bad guy breaking the laws and constitution. That his rebalious behavior isn’t heroic and instead stupid showing that he isn’t very intelegent and indeed needs the help of the professionals.
Therefore it all depends on the audience and they way they are set to believe and their ideology , background and bringing up matter on what their opinion on what situation is.

Blog Task 1

In what ways do your media products use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

1) This is the singer in the narrative although he sings and this shows the performing within narrative. This shot shows you an odd start to a pop video , it shows weird side of the world and miserable point of view instead of showing the happiness and love in the world.

2) This is a shot of the nurse drugging the patient and injecting a needle into his arm. This shot is very mysterious and gives the pop video some suspicion of what is going to come next, attracting the audience and leading them on to different idea running in their heads.

3) Discontinuity editing is very common in Pop Videos as there is a basic layout of the story but audience does not judge or take the order of the shots and continuity therefore our pop video had a lot of that. Jumping from one shot to another although having some meaning and relationship between the two.

4) This shot shows the running of the couple in the field showing the different , more romantic and sweet side of the pop video . This is very extraordinary for a pop video and its conventions as there is no narrative or performance but random running in the field.

5) Cutting from black to white is very usual for Pop Video as well. This shows the audience the contrast from dull and cold place (world) to happy and wonderful colourful world which is shown by the lead singer dreaming of running, walking and dancing through the fields.
The song that we chose for our pop video had very deep meaning behind it.

6) This shot shows in the video how the lead singer is in the mental hospital and the nurse is approaching him and injecting him with some medicine which later on makes him dizzy and dream of beautiful and colourful life. The shot is black and white to bring out the tension and show that it isn’t all perfect in his life but instead he is locked away in a mind prison and the video is the way that he escapes it.

7) Looking at this still it shows us the undermined of the actor and the dream that he is in while he is on the drugs, imagining running through the tunnel of light.

8) This picture shows the escaping of the actor from the room , the dark room , window barrels , metal bed shows the reality of how miserable and cold it is in metal hospitals. In our editing we did a special effect which twisted the picture a little bit , showing the drugs effect on the person running away from this place. The position of the camera in the front of the room with a wide shot over indicates and shows the whole realism of the escaping.

9) On the other hand this still shows us the other side of the video , where actor is in the state of dream and the door opening with the field on the other side of the door shows how the drugs have effected the patient.

10) This is my personal favourite shot I believe it shows the dream that actor is in with the girl that he is in love with , showing that anything can happen in the dream and that instead of being in real life he is better of in his imaginary world.

11) This shot is one of the final ones showing the actual escape of the patient and going out in real life , without the dream and being on drugs but coming into real life from the mental hospital that he was locked in.

This two CD Covers represent the Album and are there to advertise and sell the product.
The important part of the cover is to show the main plot of the idea behind the song. In our case it were some pictures with Photoshop of the actors from video and showing the both sides , the dark , cold and realistic and other beautiful , unrealistic and dreamy

Blog Task 2

How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

Stars and Stardom

The role of the music star is crucial to understand in order to connect and have a relationship between the music industry and its audience.
‘Star’ is a semi-mythological meaning in order to sell the performer the largest amount of audience.

Common values of Music Stardomthat were used in our Pop Video

  • Youthfulness.

  • Anti-authoritarian attitude.

  • A disregard for social values relating to drugs, sex and polite behaviour.
Conspicuous consumption, of sex, drugs and material goods.

  • Success against the odds.

Youthfulness

  • Rebellion behaviour and clothing.

  • This was shown fairly well in our pop video due to clothing worn by the actors in the video. Showing the different side and being very different from everyone else in the society.

Anti-authoritarian attitude

  • First of all our lead singer is in the mental hospital, there it shows that something is wrong from the beginning.

  • As well as the escape from the hospital shows the breaking of the law therefore anti-authoritarian attitude and behaviour

A disregard for social values relating to drugs, sex and polite behaviour

  • Through out the video the main actor is being injected with a needle getting him drugged up this goes behind disregard social behaviour of drug abuse

  • As well as in the end the lead singer breaks out of the hospital therefore breaking the rules and social values.

Success against the odds

  • The taking of the drugs shows us the bad side of the story.

  • Although the lead singer is being forced to be injected.

  • The success against the odds can be seen in the way that he escapes in the end of the video and ultimately wins the battle against the law and order.

Richard Dyer

  • The image is constructed by PR manager

  • There is always a battle between the press and the managers

  • When the press tries their best to dig up the dirt on the star, where as the managers are there to hide it and protect the star .
Paradox 1

  • The star must be simultaneously ordinary but also extraordinary for the audience.

  • In my Pop Video the actors is both , first of all he is a perfectly normal person in his dreams imagining the girl of his dreams and happiness.

  • On the other hand he is in the mental hospital , taking drugs and escaping , which makes it very abnormal.

  • Star image is ‘incoherent’

Paradox 2

  • The star must be simultaneously present and absent for the consumers.

  • The star must always be in the head of the people through the magazines , adverts, pop videos and stories that happen to the star.

  • However it is also crucial that the star is superior for the audience and the followers of the star in order to be the role model and be someone people look up to.

Blog Task 4

A director's commentary on how you used new media technologies in the construction and research , planning and evaluation statges?

It was crucial for the Pop Video to use new media technologies in all the stages of production , construction , research, planning and evaluation.
The media tecnologies where used extensively also at the development. The important part of the planning was indeed the finding of the song , relycs , if the band already had a pop video and to make sure we do not do the same. It was faily easy to find the song as all the group mambers knew it and loved it already however the internet had halped u dramatically in finding the rest , the pop video already existed so we had to come up with something different which would also suit the song . The preparation of the shooting day was crucial , all the story boards that were first of all drawn out and then shot on a digital camera which was an easy way to then transfer on final cut pro in order to make the editing easy and quick in the future.

The shoot day was all based on new media technology. The camera that we had to use was JVC 1500 E , it is fairly small comparing to any anologue cameras and light , but most importantly it has a 100 times higher quality picture which gave us a great advantage. Because it is light and small it was easy to do many difficult shots such as the chery picker shot , like the bird eye when the singer was lying in the mental hospital bed and lip singing while the camera was shooting high above him. It would of been impossible with out the new technology as the camera would of been to heavy to bring up there.

Also another shot which was very important in our pop video is when the actor and the actress where standing in the field and there is a shot of the camera spinning , the camera man had to do that shot him self , running around the actors , the only way that was possible to do is to have a light camera and run around therefore the part of new media technologies was crucial.

Finally the very important part of the new technology is the ratio of shots. Usually pop videos are made in ratio of 10:1 whioch means that every 10 shots that are taken only 1 of them would be used. Previously when there were no digital cameras a whole pop video could take up to 5 day as the camera was so big , slow that it was phisicly impossible to shoot in a shorter period of time. Now the cameras are ligher , smaller and digitalised it is no pain to take up to 300 shots in a hole day and finish the shooting of pop video with all the staff that is needed for further editing.

The next stage of our production was indeed the editing , which consumed the most amout of the whole production. After transfering the data on to our media server and starting the work from there. Digital technology made it so easy to work with the computer and the final cut pro in order to do the editing easy and the way you want it. It was easy to chop things out , put them from one place to another , transfer information and most of all do the special effects. The special effects where made also on a computer and afterwards put in with the production.
With the anologue cameras that would of been vertually impossible , first of all the editing would of taken around 20 times as much time and also much more harder as there would of been the cutting and pasting as well as the special effects would of needed to be done on the day with out reviewing it and knowing would it would look.
The CD cover and magazine were also made with help of digital technology , the photoshop that we had used for both productions is only there due to the media technology and the new inventions of computer, pcs, internet and programs that can help with all of that.
Distribution of a pop video is very important and the way to do so is by tv , sky and mainly the internet. This is where most of the people look when they off to watch a pop video or are looking of any of the new media technologies.

Therefore Media technology had improved dramatically not only the skills of our pop video and the production of it but also the whole world had benefited from the process.
